What you like to ask Dr Yunus from Portland, OR

I am very glad to know that Dr Yunus opened up his schedule to meet Portland Bangali. He is in a book tour to promote his latest book. We thank him and his book publisher for giving us this opportunity.

In his book, CREATING A WORLD WITHOUT POVERTY, Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus outlines his vision for a new business model that combines the power of free markets with the quest for a more humane world -- and tells the inspiring stories of companies that are doing this work today.

Listen to him on his crusade on proverty: http://www.dotsub.com/films/creatinga/index.php

During the weekend I called my friend Saiful in Austin TX and asked anything new happening in their community. He regretted that he missed Dr Yunus's speech that day due to some family commitments. Later that day I received a forwarded email informing Dr Yunus coming to Portland from Hamim Bhai, a fervent web researcher, apart from his daily job of designing microprocessor circuits. In that email our local contact, a PhD student at Portland State University find out, that Dr Yunus continuing his book tour in Portland. This started a race of emails to define and plan something from the community. 10-15 community members exchanged their opinions.

After 40+ emails we reached a structure.I would ask my community members to use the comment section of this post to enlist their questions to Dr Yunus. As Mothar Bhai put it "We want to hear what his vision is about Bangladesh and what are the obstacles to reach there and how we can help and contribute – in a very informal way, like as if he is one of us, sitting there and talking with us."

Our friend Shaestagir, used his charisma to get PCC in few hours notice and integrated the community opinion to a informal program. We all know about the Grameen and the Noble peace, here is what I would like to Ask and let him talk about:

His learning of Grameen (may be technology side of it); what his feeling about another Yunus? What future holds?

His view of Leader and Institution? Is it a Chicken and egg issue or catch 22? How do we create institutions that are self correcting and self-sustaining in Business as well as Politics (just explain from your personal experience of political initiatives) . What we have in Bangladesh is a constant search of an institutions from leadership, be it Supreme Court, chief advisor of CTG, Head of ACC, Head of major political parties Hasina or Khaleda and the Noble peace winner.

A lot of NRB made a significant development in Bangladesh in recent years, You, Iqbal Z Quadir (Gonophone/Grameen Phone CEO), Controversial Abdul Awal Minto, Kazi Group, Pride Garments are from USA, last week Dr Abed in genome scientist. What is the common driving force except the love of the country making this happen?

Please keep this list grow using comment section to enter your question.

Here is a question for our esteemed Nobel Laureate Dr. Yunus. You have won the most prestigious Nobel peace prize. You are not only the pride of Bangladesh but also the pride of the entire world! You draw unsurpassable respect from any human being irrespective if his/her religious, cultural and ethnic background. We all know, your word carries tremendous amount of weight among any world leaders – no need to expound on that. As a Muslim my question would be: what is your thought process in spreading peace in the middle east region? Better said, how can we bring the west and east at par as far as peace in concerned?

My second question would be, Africa is a poverty afflicted continent. What are you doing to advocate your economic theory here? Are you hopeful that in our lifetime we will see Africa where poverty is no longer the #1 priority?

Last question regarding Bangladesh, how successful you think the CTG has been thus far to eradicate the possible roadblocks for a free and fair election?

How can we expect that caretaker govt. will bring about big change in Bangladesh with a smaller number of advisers compared to big number of resources from elected political govt? Whats your opinion on this?

My question is about global warming:
Bangladesh, being a low lying delta with a very small average elevation is going to suffer the most from rising sea level due to "Global Warming" despite of being the least contributor to the cause (by per capita fossil fuel consumption). How do you feel about using your stature to raise global awareness about this issue, especially the impact on Bangladesh and other vastly populated coastal regions of the world?

Question to Dr. Yunus:
Thank you for sharing your valuable time with us. Here is my question -
In the last 36 years (since the birth of Bangladesh till today) our population doubled from 7.5 crore to 15 crore. Assuming the same growth curve, by 2045 our population may reach 30 crore.
Do you dream a 'Bangladesh without poverty' even in that time frame with that much population? WHAT ECONOMIC STEPS do you envision that can keep Bangladesh poverty free and improve the average living standard in that time frame and beyond?

Many of us wish to return to Bangladesh but the above question frightens us with the thought that we might be putting our progeny in a dangerous place despite having the chance to avoid it.

Micro finance is necessary for starting micro enterprises. But initiation of an enterprise also requires other factors like identifying opportunities, training, establishing market linkages for inputs and outputs. Along with the micro credit, do you or Grameen bank wish to provide any guidance on starting enterprises among the rural people in the future?

Hi
I have a question to ask Dr Yunus..
My question is:
====
The environment in and around Dhaka is getting
increasingly polluted due to industries in the region,
which has a big impact on the lives of the people
who work and live there.

Does any of your organization work on environmental
issues in Bangladesh?

Thanks
Lopa

A question could be: Given our current boundary conditions, what can we do to keep Bangladesh moving forward?

Another one would be: Looking around at our immediate, SARC and ASEAN neighbors, who can we leverage BEST for our interests.

I really want him to touch this issue.

Dr. Yunus envisions Bangladesh as a poverty free country by 2030. How exactly we will achieve this goal, and how we, the NRBs, can contribute and help in achieving this goal?

How do you think developed countries in the western world can better help countries like Bangladesh (and other developing nations) become poverty free?

1. One way to reduce/eliminate poverty might be to introduce appropriate technologies in rural Bangladesh. In the recent world of energy crisis, renewable energy; especially appropriate renewable energy in rural area (for example: bio energy fuel; solar panel on the roof; windmill etc) might be a very interesting sector to invest. How is Grameen banks approach toward this? As most of us have engineering background, we would like to know if there is any scope for us to contribute.

2.Poverty has a broad meaning. Besides economical poverty it could be educational poverty, it could be cultural poverty, it could be the poverty of consciousness/progressiveness. We are interested to know your plans and roadmap to eliminate the poverty of education, culture and prejudice from Bangladesh. Most of the time focusing on economic improvement helps to reduce the other forms of poverty; however is there any direct plan to improve the poverty of thought.

Does Gramin offer any product/project where any individual or a group of people (specially Bangladeshi

living abroad) can invest ? The primary goal is to help the poor people by lending money along with Gramin

Loan. As an investor we also seek some profit so that we can sustain, cover expenses, and expand further.

In a nut-shell we are looking for paid service, monitoring and guidance from Gramin.

Right now I'm in tenth grade and last year I read about you and grameen bank in school. My questions in mind are:

during your childhood years did you know that someday you would make a great impact on other people's lives?
How did you achieve the noble prize award?
